HISTORY

The idea of a modern medical center in Cebu City was first envisioned by Dr. Jose Cecilio Borromeo. Towards this goal, he organized a corporation composed of about thirty physicians who shared his ideals. He also invited into the corporation the multinational company PHILAMLIFE (led by then president Mr. Earl Carroll) who owned property suitable for the endeavor. However, it was not until ----- when the project gained momentum under the impetus of Dr. Potenciano V. Larrazabal, Jr. who joined the corporation at this time. Aside from infusing adequate financial resources, he was able to enjoin more of the medical community into the project. He keenly realized that financial, as well as medical acumen from the health-care community would be pivotal in the success of a center for medical excellence.

The cornerstone of the then Cebu Doctors’ Hospital was laid on January 30, 1970 by the officers of the corporation with His Excellency Julio Cardinal Rosales officiating.  The architect was Carlos Arguelles and the contractor, Engineer Horacio Franco, started construction on September 1, 1970.  The board decided to ask the Sisters of St. Paul, Chartres to serve administrative functions in strategic areas of the hospital; and, this they did with distinction and dedication until the latter part of 1988.

The hospital was officially inaugurated on ------ with Mrs. Aniceta Veloso de Larrazabal leading the ribbon cutting ceremony.  Since, the hospital quickly progressed and has been at the frontier of many novel concepts and initiatives.

She is the first institution in Cebu City to be systematized into Clinical Departments and to require Board Certification for all medical staff. Structured residency training programs in the different clinical departments were also organized.  Eventually, these Residency Training Programs were accredited by the respective medical specialty societies.  For many programs, this was a first within the locality.  Regular surgical and medical audits, tumor board, morbidity and mortality conferences and journal club meetings found root, and the practice is still rigorously upheld until the present.

The hospital has also wholly expanded and now boasts state of the art facilities backed by renowned medical practitioners and an empathic paramedical staff.

The Cebu Doctors’ College was founded and placed the hospital at the forefront of the academe.  The first to be organized was the College of Nursing.  Soon, others followed.  Eventually, the College of Medicine was established and has since saw board toppers and exemplary graduates.  These distinctions paved the way to what is now Cebu Doctors’ University

The Hematology-Oncology unit was established and complementing this, the hospital opened the Radiation Therapy Center in May 2001. Here, physicians have at their disposal different modalities of treatment; moreover, it is equipped with a treatment simulator and computerized treatment planning system, distinguished as the only facility in the Visayas and Mindanao areas outfitted with the technology.  The use of these modalities virtually assures the cancer patients of accurate and precise radiation treatments through a 6 MV Linear Accelerator (external beam radiation).

The Cebu Cardiovascular Center (CCC) housed in the entire third floor of the new wing, offers state-of-the art cardiology practice as it features a cardiac catheterization laboratory, cardiovascular and coronary care units; and, a cardiovascular operating room to handle heart surgeries and specialized surgical procedures of the cardiovascular system.

The hospital is also equipped with a Norland Medical System Excell Plus Bone Densitometer dedicated to precise bone tissue measurement. This is the most accurate method of bone density testing available today and is a safe, easy and effective system to detect low bone mass in the patients forearm, hip or spine.

The Emergency Room has been upgrade and expanded. The Intensive Care Unit boasts of updated bedside monitors and a central monitoring system. Incorporated into this unit are facilities geared primarily for Acute Stroke Care. The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit was opened in March of this year.  The main Operating Room is a complex that features updated suites not only for general surgeries but also for minimally-invasive and endoscopic procedures; and ophthalmologic surgeries.

To date, the Radiologic services department has completed the total equipment upgrade.  The armamentarium includes a state-of-the art C-Arm Digital X-ray machine with RF capabilities for Interventional Radiologic procedure, a Digital X-ray/Fluoroscopy unit; and, a 03 Tesla Hitachi Airis II Open MRI system.  All these are designed to complement the existing Shimadzu Spiral CT-Scan and a GE GDO HF Senographe “painless’ mammography unit.

The new millennium has seen the evolution of the hospital into what is now a tertiary level center.  As we move further forward, the Cebu Doctors’ University Hospital continues her commitment to the provision of the highest quality health care through the constant acquisition and modernization of equipment, maintaining and upgrading her physical structure and ensuring quality and ethical medical, paramedical and non-medical personnel patient-oriented care.
